How to Prepare

Minimize the risk of becoming infected:

  • Wash hands frequently
  • Avoid sharing foods, drinks, utensils
  • Avoid crowded settings (concerts, airports, sporting events, fairs, etc.)

Get the H1N1 vaccine which will be distributed in priority order:

  • Pregnant women
  • Young children
  • Care givers of young children
  • Adolescents and young adults
  • Whether or not you can get the H1N1 vaccine, you should get the seasonal influenza vaccine.

Travel with an H1N1 influenza kit:

  • Hand sanitizer
  • Fever reducer
  • Decongestant

Know the signs and symptoms of the H1N1 influenza:

  • Fever
  • Aching muscles and joints
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Dry cough
  • Some vomiting and diarrhea (not often seen with seasonal flu)

Monitor destinations:

  • Know whether the World Health Organization has issued a travel advisory for your destination.

HTH will monitor medical facilities in locations the WHO classifies as having a significant number of H1N1 infections. HTH will identify treatment facilities in these areas that have demonstrated the following:

  • Access to rapid H1N1 testing
  • Appropriate use of and access to antiviral medication
  • Staff and equipment to manage serious infections (e.g. respirators, equipment to monitor vitals, etc.)
  • Ability to obtain and administer the H1N1 vaccine

Coverage

Any person insured by HTH can expect full support and payment for medical care rendered (within policy limits) for persons infected with H1N1 influenza.

Medical evacuations will be coordinated and paid for provided they are medically necessary. HTH will not evacuate those infected with the H1N1 virus unless local care is not appropriate, and in the opinion of HTH's Medical Director, remaining on location could lead to serious medical consequences.

HTH does not cover accommodations for those who are not ill and are quarantined in a hotel, hospital, or other facility for the purpose of preventing the spread of the H1N1 virus.
